Minus Sign

2018-06-18 Week 25/2018 posted by RFI

The minus sign has an extra code point seperate from the common hyphen-minus present on every keyboard. While the hyphenminus may be used for both purposes, its primary function is to be a hyphen and it bears the same short length. Even in Minima, the dedicated minus sign has a different length, which is for a good reason – it aligns with the plus sign and the other basic operators as well as the digits. This provides a much neater look for mathematical expressions.

[plus minus hyphen-minus   1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10   1 − 2 − 3 − 4 = −8   1 - 2 - 3 - 4 = music.   Blackboard graphic.]

Fun fact for type designers:
Windows will interpret a font as a math font and display mathematical symbols (∑√≠) instead of letters (Abg) as soon as it contains the minus sign or any other character from the block mathematical operators. This can be unchecked by literally adding a check mark to the font. It is the presence of this precise character – checkmark, Unicode 2713 – that triggers Abg again.
