Latin Small Ligature ij

2018-03-05 Week 10/2018 posted by RFI

'ij' is een stilistische ligatuur speciaal voor het Nederlands.

It is not formally required anywhere, its code point is actually disencouraged and it's technically not even a ligature because the letters don't touch – yet its distinct handwriting shape is explicitly taught in schools, its capital form is gratuitiously used in store sign typography and it's often treated exactly like a single letter, not like a combination or digraph.

[IJsvrij. Snowy town, whiteout, partially covered by image of lush greens with people in swimwear.]

Minima proudly supports this entertaining eccentricity from the land of wooden shoes and frikandel.
