Left-Pointing Double Angle Quotation Mark (Left Guillemet)

2018-05-21 Week 21/2018 posted by RFI

[« bien sûur! », »ja sicher!«; French flag, German flag with Helvetian cross superimposed. Car roof underside and rearview mirror, cloudy sky, wind wheels, left side mirror of a truck]

Guillemets are used as quotation marks in French and many other languages and orthographies. Their technical names only refer to the direction of the angle while their placement may also be the other way around, depending on the writing system. One guillemet is composed of two angles, which is the standard form. In spite of this, the single-angle variants are also very commonly referred to as single guillemets.

Finally, the guillemet should not be confused with the guillemot which is a seabird. This misspelling is still officially recommended in Adobe's influential glyph naming recommendations AGL/AGLFN.

Bonus fact: Guillemots are also a band. Check out their debut album »Through the Windowpane«.
